Lodging and other practical info

 Lodging and Transporation

Lodging: As is customary with MoH, both to keep costs down and provide a sense of community, our main mode of lodging will be at the dormatories on campus, near to our breakfast area and our lecture hall.  This is an adults-only residence hall.  We hope that most attendees will stay at the dorms.

We have a blocks of rooms at a two nearby hotels (The Graduate and The Inn at the Michigan League) for two purposes:  (1) Because of University rules, families with non-adult children are not permitted at the dorm (so families must book either at The Inn at the League or The Graduate - please contact us if you have questions). (2) For those choosing not to stay at the dorms.  We note that The Inn at the Michigan Leagues online room reservation system has a glitch, and that you must contact them directly for reservations (see their website for contact information).

The Dorms at Stockwell Hall will be staffed until 8am-10 pm for check-in and other matters (they can be reached at (734)-764-1188 during those hours).  The phone contact for late check-ins is (734) 647-2059.  General information for dorm-life can found at : https://umich.irisregistration.com/Site/STLivingGuide.

More information on how to secure Lodging at the dorms and these local hotels, is available from the Registration Link.

Getting to the University of Michigan at Ann Arbor: Getting to Ann Arbor is easy.  We are served by the Detroit Metro Airport (DTW), which is an international airport with many direct domestic and international flights.   Ann Arbor is approximately 40 minutes away from DTW by automobile, ride share service, or taxi or limo service Limos (MetroCars - https://www.metrocars.com).  No train options exist from DTW to Ann Arbor, although the Michigan Flyer (bus) does operate that route, and is very affordable.

Travel Grants: Travel grants are available, predominantly to trainees, to help defray the costs of this workshop.  Travel grants will be made based on need and costs of travel for each candidate.  Grants for underrepresented researchers (including educational, cultural, or geographic backgrounds that are underrepresented in our field) will also be provided as well as for researchers who have demonstrated a sustained commitment to diversity in their academic, professional, or civic endeavors.  Please navigate to this website to apply.

MoH 2024 Code of Conduct

We have drawn our code of conduct from the Association for Research in Otolaryngology's code of conduct.

Harassment Defined:  Harassment includes verbal, physical, and visual conduct that creates an intimidating, offensive, or hostile environment.  Harassing conduct can take many forms and includes, but is not limited to, the following:  slurs, epithets, derogatory comments, insults, degrading or obscene words, jokes, demeaning statements, offensive gestures, or displaying derogatory or demeaning pictures, drawings, or cartoons based upon an individual’s sex, race, color, national origin, religion, age, physical  or mental disability, perceived disability, ancestry, marital status, sexual orientation, or any other basis protected by federal or pertinent state laws or local ordinances.

Sexually harassing conduct in particular includes all of these prohibited actions, as well as other unwelcome conduct that is sexual in nature, such as unwanted sexual advances; lewd propositions or innuendos; leering; making sexual gestures; making sexually suggestive or graphic comments or engaging in inappropriate sexually-oriented conversation; displaying sexually suggestive objects, graphics, pictures, or posters, whether physically  or over the Internet; making or using derogatory comments, epithets, slurs or jokes; the sexual touching or display of one’s own body; or unwanted physical touching or assault, as well as impeding or blocking movements.

Sexually harassing conduct can be by a person of either the same or opposite sex.  It is a violation of this policy for males to sexually harass females or other males, and for females to sexually harass males or other females.  Conduct that begins as consensual in nature may become harassment if one party withdraws their consent.  Sexual or other harassment prohibited by this policy is unacceptable and will not be tolerated.

The above list of prohibited behaviors is not a complete rendering of what may be deemed sexual or other harassment prohibited by this policy.  It is impossible to define every action or word that could be interpreted as harassment.  However, MoH has a “zero tolerance” policy toward discrimination and all forms of harassment.  MoH reserves the right to discipline meeting participants who engage in any inappropriate conduct, even if it is not specifically referred to or defined in this Code or is not legally actionable as sexual or any other form of harassment.

Reporting:  Violations of expected behavior, such as instances of harassment, can be reported directly to the Organizing Committee members (as a group at MoH2024OrgComm@umich.edu or individually to Karl Grosh - grosh@umich.edu, Julien Meaud – julien.meaud@me.gatech.edu, Sarah Verhulst – sarah.verhulst@ugent.be, and/or Karolina Charaiak - charazia@usc.edu). If for any reason the individual is uncomfortable with reporting to the Organizing Committee, the complaints can be submitted either to the DEI Chair (Dr. Heidi Nakajima at Heidi_Nakajima@meei.harvard.edu).  Further, a link to report violations of expected behavior via an anonymous link to our website will be made available.

Investigation: The MoH 2024 Organizing Committee (MoH OC) or DEI Chair will promptly and impartially investigate the facts and circumstances of any claim of inappropriate conduct or harassment under this policy. MoH OC will make every effort to keep the reporting individual’s concerns confidential and will not deliberately share personal information, other than as necessary to carry out the purpose of investigation. While complete confidentiality cannot be guaranteed, MoH OC will keep the investigation and its findings as confidential as possible under the circumstances. During an investigation, MoH OC or a DEI Chair, subject to obligations of confidentiality, generally will do the following (as necessary) to make a determination as to appropriate action:

We will attempt to investigate any complaint or report of a violation of this policy in a prompt and timely manner.  Upon completion of the investigation, the MoH OC or DEI Chair will take appropriate corrective measures against any person who has engaged in conduct prohibited by this policy, if MoH OC or DEI Chair determines such measures are necessary.  Such remedial action may include, but is not limited to the following disciplinary actions:

Nothing in this policy shall restrict or discourage any individual who experiences or is the target of conduct prohibited by this policy from reporting such conduct to the authorities, to the extent he or she deems such a report advisable or necessary.  Information about how to file a complaint with HHS OCR (see OCR’s webpage, Filing a Civil Rights Complaint). Information explaining that filing a complaint with the conference organizer is not required before filing a complaint of discrimination with HHS OCR, and that seeking assistance from the conference organizer in no way prohibits filing complaints with HHS OCR.  Since MoH is not a law enforcement agency, we strongly encourage people to report allegations of harassment or assault to the appropriate authorities.  We have provided the direct link to the University of Michigan’s Department of Public Safety and Security smartphone app and NIH provides a complete site describing other means of reporting to authorities.
